VIRGINIA Water manager Ceri Jones has no complaints as his side enter the New Year in eighth position in the Hellenic Premier Division, writes Rob Stevens.

The Waters were promoted as champions of Division One East in the summer but won only twice in their first 11 league matches.

They have since found their feet however and just one defeat in the last six league games, which includes three straight wins at Stag Meadow, has seen them climb into the top half of the table.

Jones told the Observer: "We've got a little bit of momentum going and I'm thoroughly delighted. Three wins on the bounce is not to be scoffed at and we're delighted with it.

"We are where we want to be at this stage of the season and, if you would have offered it to me at the start, I would've taken it all day long.

"The lads being as young as they are, they never settle on that, and now we're in that position they want to push on from it.

"If this turns out to be our position at the end of the season, with some heavy weather and pitches to come, we would've taken it all day long."

He continued: "We are now starting to win a lot of games at Stag Meadow and we're starting to establish ourselves as making our home fixtures as banker games.

"It happened for the last two seasons but for it to happen at step five is really tough because all the sides are so good.

"At least our home form is now a matter of joy for us and we can take a lot of pleasure from that."

Virginia Water return to action with a rescheduled Reading Senior Cup tie away at Wallingford Town on Tuesday 15th January (7.45pm), before hosting Tuffley Rovers in the league four days later.

Jones commented: "It is a shame that we don't have another game [in the league] until January 19th, but it's nice to have a little break because we've got a lot of home matches to come.

"When you've got the momentum it's a shame you won't play for three weeks, although if any manager wanted an enforced winter break I can't think of a better time.

"The break has come at the right time for our lads that are coming back from injury and we've got a lot of competition within the squad."
