NEWLY-PROMOTED Virginia Water and table toppers Wantage Town shared the points after a 2-2 draw at Stag Meadow.

A goal from Liam Whyte within 45 seconds of the game start gave the Waters the lead, before Steve Robertson equalised for the visitors.

The home team lead at the break thanks to a strike by Josh Hill, but Robertson levelled again for Wantage in the second half.

Virginia Water manager Ceri Jones told the Observer: “If you would have told me at the start that we will draw with Wantage I would have taken that all day long.

“As the game transpired I would like to have thought we would have kicked on and win, but credit to Wantage because they showed why they’re the only undefeated side in this league and could have won it themselves.”

The draw means Virginia Water are now in 14th position in the league table ahead of a visit to Stag Meadow from Royal Wootton Bassett on Tuesday 11th September (7.45pm).

Jones commented: “You’ve got to take the rough with the smooth. We could have had four more points on the board but equally a few less as well.”

“The league is equally as tough or tougher than I expected, but it’s a league I believe we deserve to be in.

“There are no easy three points to be had in this division because all the sides are competitive.

“To be fair to us, with a little bit of lady luck on our side we could be a couple of places and points better off. We’ve had a few rank decisions go against us.

“We’re probably two or three positions below what our performances deserve.”
