CERI JONES has admitted that Virginia Water lost to the better side on the day after a 2-0 defeat away at Bicester Town on Saturday.

The Waters surrendered their unbeaten start to the season in Hellenic Division One East with Jones giving credit to Bicester for an excellent performance.

The Virginia Water manager told the Observer: “I’m not making any excuses because of the elements but there was a severe slop on the pitch. Bicester knew how to play on it and executed their gameplan fantastically well.

“We played much better in the second half and on the balance of play deserved something, but I’m not begrudging them the win.

“Our second half performance was a lot better than the first so the scoreline might have flattered them a little bit but, on the balance of play over 90 minutes, Bicester deserved to win.

“I would have been clutching at straws to hold out for a draw and we lost to the better side on the day.”

Despite the defeat, Virginia Water remain top in the league table on goal difference from Bicester, with Jones keen for his side to bounce back with a win at Aldermaston this Saturday (3pm).

He said: “It definitely shows that there will be a lot of competition this season. We’ve made a good start but have got to bounce back and I’m looking for a reaction at Aldermaston.

“We’ve not been at our best in the last couple of weeks. We’re in a good place but I’m hoping for a reaction.

“I might blood in a few players that have been patient and waited for their chance.

“It’s early days for Aldermaston as well and they’ve not made the best of starts, but against the stronger sides, so I’m expecting another full-blooded and physical battle.”

Virginia Water are then at home to Milton United in the Floodlit Cup next Tuesday (7.45pm).

Virginia Waters Reserves remain top in Hellenic Division Two East following their 4-1 win away at London Rangers on Saturday.

The Reserves team welcome Long Crendon to The Timbers this Saturday (3pm).
