ROB Corney rewrote the Reading Roadrunners record books yet again when he finished fifth at the prestigious Brighton Marathon.

The 30-year-old Woodley racer took an amazing eight minutes and 15 seconds off his own personal best time and the club marathon record as he finished in 2hrs 19mins 12secs.

In February he had lowered the club 10-miles record by more than three minutes to a UK rankings-leading 49.43 in winning at Bramley.

Corney followed that in March by chopping more than three minutes off his own club half-marathon record when finishing 10th at Reading.

Just a week before his superb run at Brighton he shaved three seconds off the course record at Woodley park run.

Corney said: “I was absolutely over the moon with a sub 2:20.”

He had briefly led the elite field in the early stages with eventual winner Peter Le Grice, of Bristol, but faded slightly in the face of a fierce headwind in the last couple of miles as Le Grice won in 2:16.23.

But Corney said: “I’ve no regrets about how I ran it. You never know what you might do if you don’t attack it.”

Roadrunners’ chairman Phil Reay commented: "It's not just Rob's speed which is impressive, it's the way he goes about it. He leads by example with his strong work ethic and is a role model to all at the club and the town's running community.”

There was more glory for Roadrunners at Brighton when Caroline Hoskins won the 50-54 women's age-group race by almost half an hour.

That qualified her for her third international vest at different levels when she represents the England age group masters team at York in October.

Last month the 51-year-old Henley grandmother also won her age group at Fleet to qualify for the England masters half-marathon at Maidenhead in September.

Roadrunners team-mates Seb Briggs, Tracey Lasan and Nigel Hoult will also represent England at that event, along with the Reading AC middle-distance star Sarah Urwin-Mann.

Another Roadrunner, Brian Kirsopp, runs for England masters in the Great Birmingham 10k next month.
