LAST season’s beaten finalists Sunningdale & Wentworth overcame a dogged Newbold College side 2-0 on Sunday to secure their passage to the quarter-finals of the Bracknell Town & Sunday District League Senior Cup.

Sunningdale’s top scorer Paul Blanchard got the opener after 15 minutes, driving the ball past goalkeeper Vitaliy Shtefanyuk.

Taylor Elliott-Money then headed the Premier side into a two goal-lead following a Brian Murphy corner.

Newbold responded well after the break and created some excellent chances for the dangerous Richard Szoke but they could not find a way past Sunningdale keeper Matt Sershall.

Elsewhere in the Senior Cup, Saracens beat Woodley Hammers 5-3, William Twigg Vets surprisingly thrashed Premier newboys 3M 7-0, while holders FC Fernhill overcame Winkfield Cavaliers 8-3.

In the Premier Division, third-placed Finchampstead beat Bracknell Manics 8-2 and leaders Golden Farmer beat Ship 7-2, Gary Sargeant grabbing four for the Farmer, with Dan Adams getting two and Paul Long the other.

In the BTDSFL Junior Cup, Sunningdale & Wentworth Reserves won a tight encounter 2-0 at Bracknell Manics Reserves.

Rob Ellis, back in the Sunningdale side after a lengthy lay-off, opened the scoring with a bullet header from a Liam Hartley corner.

Dan Penney then got his first for the side with another header, this time Dan Walker was provider.

Other Junior Cup results included a close affair between the top two in Division Two, with Parks FC running out 4-3 winners against Ashridge.

Old Manor lost 3-2 to Braybrooke, Wokingham & Emmbrook TMW were comfortable 5-1 winners over Hope & Anchor, Bracknell Cavaliers beat Roebuck 7-2 and Bracknell Rovers A beat Finchampstead Athletic Sunday A 3-1.

BRACKNELL ROVERS A CLINICAL first-half display saw Bracknell Rovers overcome Rotherfield United FC 3-2 in the Reading Football League Senior Division.

Swords went 3-0 up in the opening 45 minutes through Gareth Evans (2) and David Bowles.

However, Bracknell gave their opponents a way back in with two goals in the final 20 minutes from Ricky Sidhu and Jordan Cuthbert.

Rotherfield were reduced to 10 men after Martin Sumner was shown a straight red on 81 minutes.

Bracknell entertain Taplow United this Saturday at John Nike Athletics Stadium (2pm ko).

Swords have been boosted by the signing of former Bracknell Town and Sandhurst Town man Ross Hogston, who has joined from Combined Counties Premier side Ash United.

Hogston, who made his first appearance on Saturday, joins a host of former Step Five and Six players, including Gavin Branch, Dan Gigg, Evans, Ashley Boyd and Chris Bowles.

This is in addition to the impressive home grown talents of David Bowles, Sean Graham, Chris Regan, James Greenaway and Steve Brock who have been putting in excellent performances this season.

Manager Richard Lloyd said: “It’s great to bring in these top players for the people of Bracknell to come and support for no admission charge.

“We really are creating the people’s club but it doesn’t stop here as we are in talks with another couple of top local players.

“There is a feeling amongst the players that once this group gels after the Christmas break, we will be in full flowing promotion form”.
