TWO suspected burglars have been arrested after residents were threatened during a terrifying raid at their home.

Police received a report that an intruder had gained entry to a residential flat in the Shieldfield area of Newcastle at about 3.45pm on Saturday.

A 23-year-old who was in the Falconer Street property at the time confronted a man who had a scarf covering his face.

The intruder had taken the residents’ MacBook laptop and two Playstation 4s before the victims challenged him at the address on.

The burglar then told the men that he had a knife and would stab them before he fled the scene.

Officers were immediately dispatched to the area and carried out a search before locating a suspect nearby.

He was arrested alongside a second man and property belonging to the victims was also recovered during the searches.

Detective Sergeant Dave Lumsden said: “It appears that the intruders gained entry to the address by scaling a balcony to get to a first floor window that was unlocked. This would have been a terrifying incident for the victims but they did exactly the right thing, stayed calm and contacted police. We were able to respond quickly and two suspects were arrested.”

James Coulson, 26, and David Smith, 49, both of Wilfred Street, Newcastle, appeared before Bedlington Magistrates Court this morning charged with one count of burglary.

They were remanded to appear before Newcastle Crown Court on November 25.
