The future of the Slough Arm of the Grand Union Canal is to be the subject of a series of public consultations

In March 2019, Slough Urban Renewal (SUR) announced it planned a development on Stoke Wharf - teaming up with specialist waterside developers Waterside Places, a joint venture between urban regeneration experts Muse Developments and waterways charity the Canal & River Trust.

The development would improve the waterspace facilities for boaters, as well as the environment around the canal.

Over the last few months, SUR and Waterside Places have appointed a professional design team to work up initial plans for the site and will be seeking public feedback.

Public consultations are planned in September with events scheduled for Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8, 11am to 5pm both at Slough Canal Festival, Monday, September 23 and Tuesday, September 24, 2.30pm to 6.30pm at the Curve in William Street.

A dedicated website – www.stokewharfmap.commonplace.is/ – has also been established.

Andy Howell, General Manager at Slough Urban Renewal, said: “We are looking forward to working with the community in Slough over the coming months to help shape our proposals. This is a great opportunity to revitalise this part of the Grand Union Canal offering high-quality canalside living and more leisure amenity for the wider community.

“Our partners, Waterside Places, have award-winning experience in developing canalside locations which will complement SUR’s extensive experience of regeneration in Slough. We do hope local residents get involved through the online consultation and by attending the events in September.”

The Stoke Wharf development will reinvigorate three parcels of land which include a former builder's merchant yard (which is owned by Slough Borough Council), land belonging to the Canal and River Trust and land currently forming public open space as part of Bowyer Playing Fields.
