A student is volunteering and raising money to tackle poverty in Tanzania.

Emily Morgan, from Rossendale will volunteer in Tanzania for three months on October 5 with international development organisation VSO, as part of the UK government funded International Citizen Service (ICS) programme. .

She will live with a local host family to fully immerse herself into the community and gain a better understanding of the challenges people there face.

Before Miss Morgan leaves for Tanzania, she needs to raise £1500 for VSO.

The student, who is 18-years-old said: "So far, I have organised raffles at my college, Bacup and Rawtenstall Sixth Form, as well as selling some of my clothes on ebay and at multiple car boot sales.

"I am planning to run the Whitworth Half Marathon this August, which I am feeling both excited and nervous about, but I hope will provide a good opportunity for fundraising.

"Hopefully I will be able to share my experiences with the schools in order to help establish after school clubs, such as sports clubs, so that young people are more engaged in education."

On return to the UK, all ICS volunteers undertake an Action at Home project, ensuring that their new skills also benefit their local communities.
