A SOCIAL group group focused on bringing men together has received a funding boost to support its projects.

Delves Lane Men’s Group, based at Delves Lane Village Hall, near Consett, secured a grant from Karbon Homes to help expand its work and fund a calendar of activities throughout the year.

The group was set up initially to provide men in the local area with a social network of peers, to help combat the often devastating effects that come with social isolation and loneliness.

Mark Whaley, centre manager, said: “Alongside the weekly activities run from the hall, such as chess, dominoes, cookery, bowling, archery, cards and quiz days, we’re also planning a calendar of speakers to come in and talk about different topics that will keep the group interesting for all, everything from mental health, to online safety and food hygiene.

“The funding has also helped us to set up a small gardening project for the summer, where members of the group can plant and look after raised beds and hanging baskets, and enjoy some time outside together.”

The group first formed in November 2017, with support from the Wellbeing from Life Service, as a way of combatting the effects of social isolation and loneliness.

Jess Wray, from Karbon Homes said: “Social isolation and loneliness are both major issues within our communities. It’s brilliant to see groups emerging which help to combat these issues, bringing men together.”
