The Tory chairman in Dominic Grieve’s constituency has spoken out amid controversy surrounding his views on Brexit.

Santokh Chhokar, chairman of the Beaconsfield Constituency Conservative Association (BCCA), said in a letter that some members of the group want to unseat Mr Grieve as MP, while others have sent messages supporting his recent actions.

The staunch Remainer has been leading the Tory rebels in having a “meaningful” vote on the withdrawal plans from the EU while still pushing for another referendum. He voted against the Prime Minister's deal last week.

And, according to a report in Mail Online, he has said the “volume of correspondence” on Brexit from his constituents has made “individual replies difficult”, adding: “I’m writing to set out in one document my reasons for concluding that the agreement that the PM has negotiated can’t receive my support.”

Mr Chhokar wrote: “We live in turbulent times and the fact that Parliament is currently deadlocked on the issue of our departure from the EU is training the patience and tempers of many members and voters who feel passionate about the issue.

“I have received representations from both members and constituents on this subject, but I have to tell you that, like Parliament, there is no unanimity of view.

“Some wish to deselect Dominic Grieve as our MP while others sent messages supporting his recent actions.

“It is not for one faction or another to demand that their opinion is paramount and that everyone else should fall into line.

“In any case it is for our MP to offer his best judgement on the issues of the day.”

He also called for the Conservative party to unite to “stop the threat of a Jeremy Corbyn government”.

More than 13,500 people have signed a petition to "deselect" Mr Grieve, whose constituency voted to leave the EU in the 2016 referendum.
