A programme which provides wheelchair basketball sessions to amputee patients has been given a lifeline, thanks to a £5,000 grant.

Maidenhead based disabled sports charity SportsAble can now continue to provide the monthly sessions to amputee patients referred by Wexham Park Hospital, after it was awarded money from financial services company OneFamily, as part of its Foundation Community Grants service.

Kerl Haslam, CEO at SportsAble, says: “The wheelchair basketball programme helps to instil a sense of achievement and self-fulfilment to our members, emotions many may not have experienced since their amputation.

“It’s also been really positive to take patients out of a clinical environment and give them an opportunity to socialise within a safe, non-judgemental and supportive community.

“Who knows, continuation of the sessions may also help us identify Paralympic champions of the future.”
