Flying the flag: Reading’s Piers Foley and Sandhurst’s David Jones are all smiles after winning the British Junior doubles title at Bournemouth.

BY JOHN O'SULLIVAN

TWO rising stars of the Bracknell tennis scene caused quite an upset at the AEGON British Junior National Championships in Bournemouth.

Esporta duo Piers Foley and David Jones knocked out number one seeds and hot favourites Samuel Ferguson and Marcus Walters to win the boys under 12 doubles title.

After losing the first set 6-3, Foley, from Reading, and Jones, from Sandhurst, looked in all kinds of trouble as they trailed 5-3 in the second.

However they won four straight games to take the set 7-5 to force a championship-deciding tie-break.

The winning team would be the first to 10 points, with a lead of at least two, and once again the Esporta pair looked to be heading to a brave defeat as they fell behind 9-7.

However, they saved two championship points before taking the tie-break 13-11 to take the title.

“We’re speechless, we definitely didn’t think at the start of the week that we would end up as champions; it feels amazing!” said delighted Jones.

“We knew that our opposition were two very good players but we feel we were mentally stronger than them and had better teamwork.

“We were 9-7 down in the match tie breaker and we brought it back - that shows how strong we are as a team.” Jones continued. Martin Weston, LTA Junior Men’s Tennis Manager who was watching, said: “The performances in the match today were excellent, especially by Piers and David.

“That’s capped a week for them where they’ve gone from strength to strength.” There was more success for Berkshire’s youngsters in the girls competition in Bournemouth where Reading’s Sophie Drakefield-Lewis, paired with Livvy Tomkins, also made a final appearance.

The fourth seeds pushed their opponents all the way before slipping to a narrow 6-2, 7-5 defeat.

Iain Bates, the LTA Junior Women’s Tennis Manager said, “Sophie and Livvy have had a super week and it was one of those days where they came up against a very good opponent in the final.”

The AEGON British Junior National Championships, from Aug 9-22, is the most prestigious tournament for youngsters and has been running for over 100 years.
