Sandhurst aiming to be 'best of the rest'

SANDHURST Town boss Jon Underwood is aiming to be "the best of the rest" in the CCL Premier Division this season.

The Fizzers currently sit fourth in the table and Underwood conceded his side are unlikely to catch the top three of North Greenford United, Camberley Town and Chertsey.

However, the Sandhurst boss is confident his side can hold off the rest of the chasing pack and secure a top four finish this season.

He said: "I think the current top three will finish as the top three and they're certainly the biggest teams in terms of budget.

"But we're leading the rest of the pack and we're aiming to be the 'best of the rest'.

"A few of the teams below us have got a few games in hand but I'd rather have the points on the board at this stage, especially when some teams will have to play up to three times a week towards the end of the season.

"Fourth would be a great achievement for us and we've got to play a lot of the teams around us over the next few weeks so it's in our hands."

Sandhurst have endured a frustrating week of inactivity as they were without a game last weekend and then saw Tuesday night's scheduled trip to Molesey postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

Sandhurst are also without a game this Saturday but finally return to action next Tuesday when they entertain table-topping North Greenford.

Johnny Fisk is the only absentee as he serves a one match suspension.

"The break has been frustrating as we'd built up a bit of a head of steam and we wanted to keep the games coming," Underwood said.

"We'll continue to train indoors and it just means we'll be playing Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday until the end of the season now."

Sandhurst came from behind to beat Raynes Park Vale 2-1 last Wednesday.

The Fizzers went behind after just five minutes, but James Mepham equalized with a penalty on the hour mark and then Dan Simmonds bagged the winner with 10 minutes to go.

"We did really well as it was a freezing night and the pitch was poor," Underwood.

"We showed a lot of character to come back and it was the second game in a row we've won after going behind."
