Bracknell 16 - 8 Luton
A 16-POINT second-half haul helped Bracknell RFC battle their way to a much-needed victory over fellow strugglers Luton.
Without a win in the league since November, the Lily Hill men knew that anything but a triumph against National Three South East basement side Luton would have been a severe blow to their survival hopes.
As it was, a strong wind made it tough going in the first period for the home side, and it wasn't until Steve Bryant's try on the hour mark that they opened up an 11-5 lead.
"We're all very pleased that we managed to grind out the win," Bracknell coach Alan Leishman told the News.
"They are one of two sides below us in the table so we knew that it was a big game and it was nice to perform well and get the victory.
"We played into the wind in the first-half and made a few bad decisions with our kicking which was how they scored their try. But it was a better performance from the whole team overall, the backs especially played well as they have been in recent weeks."
While Bracknell remain in the relegation places despite the win they are now just four points away from safety.
And Leishman hopes that his side can build on the victory over Luton to go on a run that would ensure their survival.
"We want to go on from here and get a win next weekend that would really kick start our attempt at staying in the league," he said.
The Lily Hill men trailed 5-0 at the interval against Luton but moved into the lead thanks to a couple of penalties from Ben Nowak, the latter coming as a result of Sam Collins' yellow card.
Bryant then ran in the home side's only try and Nowak converted to make the score 13-5.
Although Luton cut the gap with a penalty from Jake Harris, Nowak had the last say when he kicked a three-pointer late on.
Up next for Bracknell is a trip to face mid-table side Civil Service on Saturday (2.15pm ko).
