BRACKNELL RFC chairman of rugby Guy Young believes the Lily Hill Park boys will be their own biggest rivals as they chase promotion to National Two South this season.

The former National One outfit have finished in the top-three in each of the last three seasons, but as yet a title charge has proved elusive.

Darian Uys took over from Ken Hopkins as head coach during the summer following a third-placed finish in National Three London last term.

And Young believes all the ingredients are now in place to challenge for top spot.

He said: “This year I sense the want is there. A lot of the players have been with the side for the three or four years and they are sick of playing second fiddle.

“But they will continue to do that if they sit back and don’t show the desire every week.

“The aim is to be challenging for the title and I think we have got a team to do that.

“There is no big-spending team like Jersey this year. And I honestly believe there is nobody else we have to worry about but ourselves.”

Young believes last season’s failed promotion attempt is not the end of the world. And he feels the key this year will be turning up to every single game.

He said: “I was not too disappointed we did not get promoted last season.

“We showed we have the heart and the guts to beat a team like Jersey, but maybe we were not quite ready to get promoted.

“This season we will be a year stronger and more experienced.

“I hope they learned a lot from last season and show the hunger and passion every week because I cannot go on the park with them.

"We can’t afford any more stupid results, like losing to Havant last season.

“We’ve got a good future as a club and we can go as far as the players want this year.”
