BRACKNELL Town put on a five-star show at Dorking to launch their FA Cup campaign in style.
Steve McClurg’s visitors showed their ruthless streak against their Combined Counties hosts to clinch a mammoth win in the extra preliminary round tie.
A Ben Knight brace plus goals from Calum Whitty, Tom Nugent and Dean Thomas continued Robins’ winning start to the season following last week’s 2-0 victory at Oxford City Nomads in the Hellenic League Premier Division.
Suddenly, the gloom of last season’s relegation is already lifting over Larges Lane and joint-manager McClurg admitted: “Saturday was a great result for us and it’s nice to see us scoring goals.
“But it’s one step at a time and there are still areas we can improve in. However, the main thing is the lads are enjoying themselves which makes a massive difference in the dressing room.
“When you are winning it is great. It’s when you lose a few games you get problems. But they’re a happy bunch, though they realise there is more room for improvement.”
The 5-0 scoreline may have flattered Bracknell. Dorking were always a threat but had nothing to match the visitors’ cutting edge.
Whitty’s clinical finish gave them an 18th minute lead then a two-goal burst inside four minutes killed off the hosts.
Firstly, Chicks’ keeper John McBride flapped under a Scott Bursill cross allowing Nugent to head home on the half hour mark. And before Dorking could recover, Thomas’ wayward effort landed at the feet of Knight who gratefully slotted home.
Knight also won a penalty only to miss from the spot but Thomas made no mistake with Robins’ fourth with 10 minutes remaining.
Then Knight saved the best until last when he left a trail of Dorking defenders in his wake before netting the fifth.
Robins now travel to Ryman League side Walton & Hersham in the next round on Saturday, August 28.
This Saturday they return to league action at Larges Lane against Slimbridge (3pm ko) before hosting Thame United next Tuesday night (7.45pm ko.)
And McClurg insisted: “We’re starting from scratch really and building a side. It takes time and nobody is resting on their laurels or taking anything for granted.
“But luckily we have players who want to play for Bracknell Town. I’m delighted for them because they’re doing to business at the moment. Who wouldn’t be happy after the start we’ve had?”
Bracknell Town: Tillson, Wright, Wyatt, Woozley, (Campbell 69) Bursill (Christian 58), Yorke-Goldney, Ryan, Nugent (Sayers 76), Whitty, Knight, Thomas. Subs not used: Mansfield, Nicholas, Arquimba.
* BRACKNELL TOWN have issued a heartfelt thanks to supporters who helped spruce up Larges Lane.
Joint-boss Steve McClurg said: “All the players and staff would like to thank everyone who gave up their time to tidy the ground.
“They did a fantastic job and we’re extremely grateful.”
