Rob Saunders has started the season in goal-scoring form
ASCOT United boss Stuart Scammell was thrilled to see his side start their Hellenic Premier Division campaign with two wins - but he has warned them there is still plenty of work to do.
The Yellamen beat Carterton 2-1 on Saturday to move to the top of Premier Division table after the second weekend of the season.
This is in stark contrast to last year’s form, which saw United lose six of the first seven and wait more than a dozen games to get to six points.
But Scammell, whose side are in their second year in the top flight, says none is getting carried away just yet.
He said: “It took us 13 games to get six points on the board last season, so two wins out of two and six points on the board - you can’t really ask for any more.
“It is the start that we had in mind, most definitely. But there is a hell of a lot of improvement to be had. I have seen us play a lot better than that and we will continue to work hard.”
On Saturday Jon Bennett - who was dropped for the season-opening win over Thame last Tuesday - was restored to the side and put the Yellamen in front after 28 minutes.
Early in the second half Rob Saunders notched his third goal in two games to extend the Ascot lead. And, despite a late consolation goal for the hosts, this was enough to give United all three points.
Scammell was particularly pleased with how his recent signings from Reading Town, goalkeeper Chris Grace and attacking midfielder Ian Brooks have settled into the squad.
He said: “The additions to the squad have all fitted in really well. Ian has lots of energy and drives us forward from midfield.
“Chris showed everyone in this division last year that he is a very good keeper. He kept a lot of clean sheets with Reading Town and we are delighted to have him here.”
The United boss was also full of praise for the two goalscorers on Saturday.
He said: “You always know what you are going to get with Rob and he has taken his goals well in the first two games.
“Jon seems very fired up at the moment. He didn’t start against Thame, but kept his head down and is reaping the rewards of working really hard over the summer.”
On Saturday United host Highworth Town in their first home game of the season.
Striker Jon Finneston is the only big injury doubt for those games.
Scammell said: “It is an ankle injury, but we are still waiting to see how serious it is. It is not a break, but he was on crutches for a few days.
“We are hopeful he may play some part over the Bank Holiday, but we will have to wait and see.”
Elsewhere Scammell reports the squad is fighting fit.
He added: “Last year we were not happy with our fitness at this stage and that is something that we vowed would never happen again. Everyone has worked really hard and we are happy with where we are at."
