WOKINGHAM and Emmbrook chalked up their first point in Hellenic League Premier Division after an entertaining 1-1 draw at home to Slimbridge.

But they were left to rue what might have been after squandering the lead again.

Wayne Wanklyn’s side lost their opening fixture at this level 2-1 to Kidlington last week after Adam Cornell had fired them ahead.

They also got their noses in front at Larges Lane on Saturday through Shane Cooper-Clark’s first-half strike.

But failed to hold on and an unfortunate Tom Hopper own goal saw fellow Premier Division newcomers Slimbridge snatch a point with 12 minutes to go.

If luck deserted the Satsumas at the end, it was the same story at the start.

They hit the bar twice when Cornell’s effort and David Bellis’s follow-up rattled the bar just five minutes in.

Then Alex Luis and Swans’ Lewis Wilton traded chances before the hosts broke the deadlock in the 39th minute.

Bellis turned his marker with a brilliant piece of skill and slid in Cooper-Clark who smashed an angled drive into the far corner.

But the Swans came flying out for the second half, with Stuart Harris saving a Marvin Roberts header and Joe Tustain firing wide.

Cornell also wasted a chance to double Wokingham’s lead before the visitors were gifted their fortunate equaliser when a freak bounce caused Hopper’s clearance to end up in the top corner of his own net.

It was particularly harsh on Hopper, who earned the praise of his manager for his impressive all-round display.

Slimbridge could have scored twice more soon after but Adam Phip and Paul Carter fired wide.

Then Wokingham threatened to nick it at the death but sub Chris Fowes could not keep his header on target from Shaun Wanklyn’s excellent centre.

Boss Wanklyn stated: “We played some great football and competed well in all areas of the park. We all feel for Tom Hopper as he had been a tower of strength for us at the back and certainly didn’t deserve that kind of luck.”

Wokingham now prepare for two successive away games in the Premier Division at Old Woodstock Town this Saturday then at Carterton next Tuesday night.
