BINFIELD assistant manager Keith Pennicott-Bowen believes the Moles have what it takes to improve on last term’s impressive debut season in the Hellenic Premier Division.
And he has challenged the players to prove it by going further than they ever have done before in the FA Cup this Saturday.
The Moles finished eighth in the top flight last year. But there is an air of optimism around Hill Farm Lane that they can do better this time.
Pennicott-Bowen said: “Our ambition is to improve on last season’s position.
“The weather did compromise us last season because we played a lot of home games at the start and with the bad weather we had to compress away games into the last two months of the season.
“Hopefully it’ll be a nice, even season.”
The assistant manager is also targeting a good FA Cup run this season after being knocked out in a thrilling 5-3 preliminary round encounter against Colliers Wood United in their first match in the competition last year.
The Moles face Sussex County Division One outfit Crawley Town on Saturday.
“It’s our second year in the FA Cup, we were out in the first round last season so we’ll look to do better this year,” stated Pennicott-Bowen.
“It’ll be tough because Crawley are a good outfit, organised and a similar sized club to us.
“It’d be good to get a result especially for the chairman and the people involved with Binfield. It’d be a nice little step forward for the club as well.”
New manager Mark Tallentire is also feeling confident about the Moles’ chances this season but knows they need to tighten up in defence.
“I felt our goals against column last season was far too many and I need to address that,” he said.
“Good teams have a solid foundation, they don’t concede a lot of goals and that’s what I’m looking to instill in our group.”
Tallentire has added defender Paul Mortimer, defender/midfielder Matt Humphrey and striker Carl Davies to the squad and is hopeful they can make an impact.
He said: “They’ve already shown their qualities in the pre-season games.”
He added: “We want to improve on what we did last year and I’d be happy with that. All you can do is get off to a really good start.”
l BINFIELD made a positive start to their League campaign on Monday evening with a 3-1 home win against Witney United.
The Moles were far from their best in the encounter at Hill Farm Lane, but took all three points as their impressive new strike-force was quickly off the mark.
Carl Davies opened the scoring from the spot before United equalised with a penalty of their own.
Ian Davies then made it 2-1 to the Moles before Carl Davies' second penalty wrapped up the win.
