WHITEGROVE FC chairman Colin Whitton is hoping to see his club go from strength to strength after they celebrated their 10th anniversary in style this week.

The Warfield-based youth football club - which has clubs ranging from under-7s to under-18s - held a swanky awards night at Blue Mountain Golf Club last Friday, which was attended by over 400 people.

The club's youngest member, Jake Rosewell, who is a member of the under-6s soccer school, and one of the oldest players Jon Emmins helped Whitton cut a Whitegrove FC cake to commemorate the special anniversary. And the chairman reports a great time was had by all.

He said: "It went extremely well. I would say it was a brilliant success.

"We had over 400 people there, which was great to see. We usually hold an end of year awards night at the pavilion at Westmorlands, but we thought we'd do something bigger for the 10th anniversary.

"It was so successful we might end up doing it every year now.

"We also had a golf tournament earlier in the day at the course which 44 players played in. So all in all it was a very good day."

Whitegrove was set up in May 2000 by Hugh Jones and has continued to grow ever since. Last season 326 players turned out for the club across 25 teams playing games at Westmorlands, Birch Hill and Wildridings.

Looking forward, though, the club are looking to strengthen their roots in Warfield. The chairman added: "There are a few things to be sorted out but we are hoping to move our 11-a-side matches to Priory Field in Warfield soon.

"There is a chance the pitches will be ready for September, but probably January is a more realistic target.

"It will be a great boost for the club. What we want to do is give as many kids as possible in the area the chance to get out and play football."
