McClurg brings stability to Bracknell Town

BRACKNELL Town manager Steve McClurg promises to bring some much-needed stability to Larges Lane.

McClurg is confident he will not make the same mistakes of previous management regimes which saw a high turnover of players and very little continuity.

Now McClurg and joint-boss Richard Whitty plan to do things their own way by forming a settled squad based around a strong core group of players.

"Bracknell have struggled with players coming and going in the last few years," McClurg told The News.

"I don't want to criticise anyone but it's not how I would go about building a team.

"You've got to build the foundations first then work around that. In order to do that you need some sort of continuity. That's what we need at Bracknell."

When the Robins parted company with former boss Dave Tuttle following a disastrous season they immediately turned to ex-Binfield duo McClurg and Whitty.

The pair are vastly experienced at this level and their strong links with Bracknell made them the ideal package during a period of turmoil at Larges Lane.

However, McClurg plans to make one further addition to his coaching staff as focus already shifts onto pre-season training in early July.

"The more the merrier, that's what I say," added McClurg, who hopes to make an announcement next week. "Having someone else around makes life easier for everyone.

"I want this club to be a close-knit team right the way through because it always works out best that way."

Bracknell were relegated from the Southern League last season and will start the next in the Hellenic League Premier Division where local derbies against Wokingham and Emmbrook, Ascot United, Reading Town and Binfield await.

And McClurg's full attention between now and then will be on strengthening his squad: "We're making contact with players at the moment and the nearer we get to pre-season training the more news we will have," he explained.

"Like every other club, we're looking at all possibilities. The main thing for me is that they really want to play for Bracknell Town."

Preparations for next season are already underway with more than 20 tons of new soil brought in this week to improve the Larges Lane pitch,

Off the pitch, it is also believes the Robins are close to agreeing a deal with a new shirt sponsor.

McClurg declared: "We welcome all new sponsors on board and would love to hear from anyone who wants to get behind us."

Meanwhile, former Bracknell boss Byron Walton has been linked with a return to his old club Windsor & Eton. Walton, who managed the Robins two years ago, is thought to be lined up as Dave Mudge's assistant if Keith Scott leaves Stag Meadow.
