Dean Thomas is congratulated by his team-mates after putting Finch in front.

NEIL White paid one last tribute to his Finchampstead players for transforming their season after they claimed another prized scalp at the weekend.

White stepped down as first-team manager following Tuesday night's fixture against Eton Wick after a 20-year association with the club.

And 'Mr Finch' cannot have enjoyed himself more than in these past few weeks. A month ago White's side had won only once in 14 Hellenic League Division One East games to leave themselves in relegation danger, with a 4-0 defeat at Holyport the lowest point of all.

But a famous derby victory over promoted rivals Wokingham and Emmbrook was the catalyst for a superb run that fired them up the table.

So the significance of last Saturday's 1-0 home victory over high-flying Holyport was not lost on White.

"Holyport beat us 4-0 at their place and it was all going pear shaped," he recalled. "But the way the lads held it together and dug in has been tremendous.

"We've been on a great run. We've beaten Wokingham and Holyport and drew away at Woodley Town who are all top four clubs.

"It's been a remarkable turnaround and in some ways we don't want the season to finish.

"There's a great buzz about the place and it's a shame we can't start the season all over again."

Sadly, White is departing when Finch are hitting top gear, as they showed again by beating a strong Holyport outfit.

A clinical 10th minute strike from Dean Thomas secured the points though Finch also withstood plenty of Holyport pressure with keeper Nick Rumsby in fine form.

White's men nearly added a second when Garry Sargeant struck the bar and the delighted Finch boss added: "Dean Thomas has hit some great form, Gary Sergeant did an excellent job on his own up front and Nick Rumsby pulled off some crucial saves.

"But everyone worked tremendously hard and the lads have made me very proud."

Finch: Rumsby, Knight, Wyatt, Bursill, Prentice, Wright, Thomas, Ryan, Sargeant, Murphy, Yorke-Goldney. Sub used: S. Selby. Subs not used: P.Selby, Hollis.
