BINFIELD boss Steve McClurg paid tribute to the 'massive' contribution made to the club by chairman Rob Jones.

Jones announced on the club's website last Saturday that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season after 17 years.

And McClurg, who has been manager at Stubbs Lane for the last two years, was quick to praise the chairman's commitment to bringing the club forward.

He said: "Rob has made a massive contribution to the club.

"It is only my second season here, but the club has come a long way one and off the pitch in that time.

"Binfield now has the facilities and the team of a Premier Division club.

"We sat down together when I first came in and he told me what he wanted from me and what he would do in return and he has been true to his word.

"He has backed everyone to the hilt.

"I've always said we are a team at Binfield - the management, the players and the staff - and he has been a very important part of that."

Under the stewardship of Jones, Binfield have certainly come a long way.

Last summer the club moved up to the step five of non league football for the first time in their history, and the infrustructure at Stubbs Lane has followed suit.

Exciting times lay ahead for the Moles. And Jones believes this makes it a perfect time to step aside.

He said: "After 17 years with Binfield Boys, Binfield Forest and then the merged Binfield FC it's time to give someone else a chance to steer the club.

"We've gone from one under-11s team playing at Popes Meadow in 1993 to a club with 28 teams including a 1st team playing in the Hellenic League Premier Division with floodlights and a grandstand.

"We are also an official FA Charter Standard Community Club making us one of the top few clubs in the Berks & Bucks FA."

Now Jones is will turn his concentration to his work commitements and his family.

He continues: "It has been a privilege to serve the members and I will continue to support the club as much as I can given my work commitments which now include the broadcasting of F1, NFL and ICC Cricket.

"I would like to thank everyone at the club for their support but most of all, Jackie my wife, for her understanding with the massive amount of time the role has taken.

"The club is in brilliant shape for the new chairman or indeed chairwoman to take us to the next stage."
