ASCOT United boss Stuart Scammell has praised the maturity of his squad this week after two wins over the Bank Holiday weekend secured their Hellenic Premier Division status for another year.

Last Thursday evening goals from Sam McIntyre, Tim Standing, Rob Saunders and Steve Curtis helped United to a 4-2 win over Ardley United.

And then on Bank Holiday Monday the Yellamen hammered local rivals Binfield 4-0 with Standing and Curtis again among the goals.

This saw United move 16 points and four places clear of the drop zone. And with many of the teams below Ascot still to play each other, they now cannot be caught.

A delighted Scammell said: "We have always said that our aim this season was to establish ourselves in this division and anything above that was a bonus.

"We set our target as 50 points at the start of the season. We can't reach that now, which is disappointing, but we have maintained our status in the Premier Division, which is a great achievement.

"We were a bit naive and got caught out earlier in the season, but we have been constantly learning.

"The players have worked tirelessly throughout and have now been rewarded for that."

And Scammell could not hide his delight at securing safety at the home of his side's closest rivals Binfield.

He said: "It was a very mature and disciplined display. We kept our heads when everyone around us was losing theirs.

"They have had the Indian sign over us in recent years, so to get one back over them is very pleasing.

"We have had a great weekend.

"Against Ardley United we were very good and played some very good football.

"I think we were good value for both wins."

United could have wrapped up safety at home to struggling Fairford on Saturday, but the fixture fell foul of the weather.

Scammell added: "It was a shame that we could not get the game on against Fairford on Saturday.

"Everyone at the club worked hard to get it on and in my opinion it was playable, but the referee felt it was not."

United, who now have two games remaining, have no game this weekend.
