United open 11-point gap

Ascot United 3, Carterton 1

ASCOT United moved 11 points clear of the Hellenic Premier Division drop zone last night (Wednesday) with a crucial 3-1 win over fellow strugglers Carterton.

The Yellamen trailed 1-0 at the break, but powered back into the contest in the second half with two goals from Richard Mills and one from Jon Bennett.

A defeat last night would have seen Carterton, who are only out of the relegation zone on goal difference, drag Stuart Scammell's side right back into the dog fight at the bottom of the table.

But United continued their recent form - which has seen them lose just once in the last eight - to move further clear of danger.

Scammell said: "Carterton is the first of seven straight games at home, so we are confident we can continue the form we have shown over the last month.

"We like to get the ball down and play and the Racecourse pitch allows us to that.

"We are looking to put as many points on the board as possible, and drag more and more teams into the relegation picture."

And that is exactly what the Yellamen did last night as the three points catapulted them ahead of Marlow United and puts them level on points with 15th placed Shrivenham.

Indeed Scammell's side are now just six points adrfit of the relative safety of 11th place.

Last night Carteton edged in front three minutes before the break through Michael Duerden, but the Yellamen stormed back into the game in the second half with three well-taken goals.

Bennett got them back on level terms on 67 minutes with a cracking half-volley from outside the box after a corner was headed clear.

Mills then kept his composure to put the Yellamen in front with 19 minutes to play before his second made sure of the win in thefinal minutes.

United now host second-placed Almonsbury at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday.
