McClurg - We can be top six side

BINFIELD boss Steve McClurg is adamant his side are good enough to challenge at the top of the Hellenic Premier Division after they made it four wins in a row on Saturday with a 5-2 victory over rock-bottom Bicester.

After making an excellent start to their first ever season at step five of the non-league pyramid, the Moles suffered a loss of form towards the end of 2009. However their recent improvement has lifted them back up to ninth place in the league table.

And with fifth-placed Kidlington set to visit Hill Farm Lane on Saturday, McClurg is confident his side are good enough to mix it with the likes of the Oxfordshire side.

He said: "The way we are playing at the moment we will take on anyone, especially at home. I think we are a top six side, I really believe that.

"The onus is always on the home side, and we have done well there.

"That doesn't mean we will be underestimating anyone. We are still taking one game at a time and know that if we do not prepare any team in this league can beat us."

On Saturday the Moles continued their impressive form by overwhelming basement boys Bicester.

Recent signing from Winchester City Ian Davies once again made an impact by hitting a hat-trick, while Callum Whitty and Danny Wing were also on target.

Binfield took little time to ram home their advantage, storming into a 2-0 lead within six minutes through goals by Davies and Whitty. Davies then added his second as the Moles led 3-0 at the break.

McClurg said: "We got off to a great start with two goals in the first four or five minutes. You don't really expect that to happen, but it always helps.

"We were 3-0 up by the half and to be honest it could have been more. We knocked it about really well and played some good stuff in the first half.

"After that the conditions were not particularly good and the pitch churned up as the game went on. It was not easy for either side."

Bicester gave themselves a lifeline when a Kyle McCoy freekick reduced the deficit in the first minute of the second half. But normal service resumed after that and Davies completed his hat-trick before Wing made it 5-1 with three minutes to play.

Chris Halliday hit a late consolation for Bicester. And McClurg admits the two goals conceded in the second half ruined an otherwise good day at the office for his side.

He said: "We are disappointed to concede the two goals because really it is a game we could have won 5-0, or even more.

"Chris Adams was disappointed to let in the free-kick, but he has been fantastic this season and I've got no complaints about him at all."

Following Saturday's game against Kidlington, Binfield have another home game against Shrivenham on Monday evening.
