Binfield

BINFIELD boss Steve McClurg paid tribute to his side's hard work and last ditch defending as they made it three wins on the bounce with a surprise 3-1 victory over title-chasing Shortwood United on Saturday.

The Moles rode their luck at times in the first half before making the most of their chances after the break as they moved back up to ninth place in the Hellenic Premier Division table.

After a slow start to 2010 Binfield finally appear to be returning to their early season form. And McClurg feels Saturday's win proves they can be a match for anyone in the division.

He said: "I thought it was a good game between two good sides.

"If I'm honest they had the better of the first 25 minutes, but then again I think we had the best chance of the first half through Ian Davies.

"I would say 0-0 was a fair result at half-time and then in the second half we took our chance. They put us under pressure late in the game, but we reacted well.

"There were some last ditch tackles going in and I thought we defended really well.

"We used all three subs again and all 14 players played well. I think you have to use your full squad at this level because it is so competitive and if you let off even for a short time you will be beaten.

"We are well pleased to get the win."

The Moles were on the backfoot against Shortwood for much of the first half before Davies went close.

McClurg explained: "He beat two players and got into a good position, but hit it over the bar.

"He did really well actually because he made it all himself, but couldn't finish it."

This proved to be the closest either side came to opening the scoring in the first half. But after the break the Moles took advantage of two well-flighted Carl Withers free-kicks to steal in front.

McClurg said: "We got a freekick out left and Carl Withers swung the ball in very dangerously and their centre back headed it into his own net.

"Three minutes later we got another free kick and Carl swung it in again and it missed everyone and went in.

"He takes a great free-kick, they are very difficult to defend."

Matt Collins pulled one back for United soon after, but some impressive rearguard action from the Moles kept them out thereafter before Davies made sure of the win.

McClurg said: "They put the pressure on for 10 or 15 minutes, but to be honest we gifted them a goal with a mistake.

"But after that we defended well and managed to nick a third.

"Steve Nebbett came on for the last 20 minutes and he played a good ball through to Ian Davies and he controlled it and then curled it past the keeper."

The goal was Davies' first since joining from Winchester City earlier in the month. And McClurg is thrilled with how quickly he has fitted in.

He said: "He has fitted in straight away. It was a good goal and we are pleased with him."

On Tuesday evening the Moles were due to travel to Ardley United but the game was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

Next up for McClurg's side is a trip to rock-bottom Bicester on Saturday. And then next Tuesday they have a chance to give local rivals Ascot United a boost when they take on relegation-threatened Malmesbury Victoria.

Binfield: Adams, Partridge, Callaway, Millward, Fenton, Williams, Suarez, Withers, Walsh, Davies, Whitty. Subs: Tallentire, Gumbs, Wing, Nebbett.
