MORE than 100 people turned out at Ascot Racecourse to remember Arsenal legend David Rocastle in a special memorial match recently.

Significantly, his son Ryan, 20, rose through the youth system at Ascot United and in a special tribute to his father agreed to referee the game. It was an impressive crowd given the hasty arrangement of the game, with the whole evening organised in less than two weeks and involving a multitude of people and companies, including the Hospitality and Catering News and Piebury Corner, who supplied the pies for the event.

Two Ascot United Under 15 teams took each other on to remember 'Rocky' Rocastle who died on March 31, 2001, aged just 33. One team played in Arsenal's yellow kit, all with 'Rocky' and number seven on the back.

The match was a tight affair and nearly finished 1-0 to the Arsenal but for Gianluca Greenwood's second strike in the last attack of the game.

A framed collection of pictures was presented to Ryan and after the match he told The Villager: "I'm so happy at the amazing turnout for the match.

"Ascot United was my old club, Arsenal was my dad's, so it was really fitting.

"It was an amazing tribute to my dad.

"I've got good memories here. There's been a lot of changes and it looks like a club on the up."
