READING FC's League Cup first round tie against Charlton Athletic due to be played at The Valley has been postponed after a third night of rioting in London.

Charlton's stadium is close to Lewisham where rioting occurred on Monday.

A statement on the club's website read: "Clearly the most important factor is the people's safety. The police have told us they believe the match should be postponed on safety grounds and obviously we have taken that advice." It is understood the Football Association (FA) will hold a routine meeting with police today to seek guidance over Englands friendly with the Netherlands due to be played on Wednesday evening.

The League Cup tie between West Ham and Aldershot has also been postponed.
