BRADLEY Dredge narrowly missed out on winning the Celtic Manor Welsh Open yesterday (Sunday).

The golfer who represents the Mill Ride Club in Ascot led the field going into the final round, however, an inspired back nine from South African Richard Sterne saw him beat the Welshman by one shot.

Dredge led the field with German rookie Martin Kaymer on 10-under after three days, but got off to a bad start with two boogies in the first two holes of the final round.

He recovered well and successive birdies on the 16th and 17th put him level with clubhouse leader, Sterne, going into the last hole.

Sterne had produced a sensational five-under-par back-nine of 29 to finish the tournament on 13-under.

Going into the last hole Dredge knew a birdie would be enough to win him the competition, while par would force a play-off. However, he saw his seven-foot par-putt trickle off the lip of the cup to give Sterne victory.

Ascot-born Ross Fisher failed to make the cut at Celtic Manor despite a solid first round.

On Thursday the Wentworth golfer hit a level-par round of 69. He followed this up with a three-over-par round of 73, which saw him miss out by five shots.
