A BIG weekend for Ascot United Football Club saw the senior men's team installed as Reading Senior League Champions while their U11 side picked up one of the biggest junior trophies around.

The men's team secured league title for the first time in their history with a 3-1 victory over Highmoor Ibis on Saturday.

Two goals came from their leading scorer Jon Bennett and the other from Garyth Brant.

United's director of communications, Steve Brine, said a lot of the senior team's success stemmed from their budding youth set-up, which is one of the biggest in the country.

He said: "Over the last few seasons we have had a number of good players coming through the youth system. This is the first championship we have won and it is the culmination of a couple of seasons of maturing into a good team." And the success of the flourishing youth set-up was again on show on Sunday when a team from Ascot United won the U11 Slough & Windsor Open Challenge Trophy.

Antony Lewendon was the star of the show, scoring five goals in a 7-0 victory over Harefield United at Maidenhead Football Club's York Road ground. Skipper Tom Dadswell also scored with a delightful lob-shot from 25 yards and Matty Bradshaw converted a cross from James Kane, who was excellent throughout.
