FINCHAMPSTEAD joint-skipper Russell Lane predicts they need to win just one of their last three games to stay up in Home Counties Premier League Division Two West.

Finch were robbed of a gilt-edged chance to pick up a possible 25 points last weekend when their game at basement boys Beaconsfield was cancelled because of the rain.

It means with three games to go Finch and Dinton are locked on 159 points each, with rock-bottom Beaconsfield six points behind.

This weekend they entertain leaders Reading then travel to third-placed Slough before finishing with a home game against mid-table Farnham Royal.

However, Lane is confident they can pull it off: “If we win all three we’re definitely safe but I think just one might do it,” he suggested.

“Saying that, I believe our run in is harder than Dinton’s and Beaconsfield’s. So whoever wins most games between Dinton and ourselves will probably stay up.

“But it doesn’t matter what the others do, we are only in control of our own performance. Maybe one good performance is all we need.

“It is not going to be easy because we’re playing some very good sides. Saying that, this is a chance for the boys to show some fight and show they are good cricketers.”

Reading won the earlier clash with Finch by six wickets at Sonning Lane. Spin duo Dave Hartley (5-77) and Berkshire’s Luke Beaven (4-55) combined to dismiss Finch for 178 before Reading got them for the loss of four wickets with Nathan Stothard hitting 57 not out and skipper David Barr 39 not out in an unbroken 85-run stand.

But Lane and Finch’s on-field captain Matt Jones will be looking for more from their team on home turf and Lane admitted: “A derby always spices things up but Reading are not top for nothing.

“We batted well against them at their place but our bowling was disappointing so we know we must do better on Saturday.”
