WOKINGHAM remain in trouble after holding title-chasing Kew to a draw in Division One.

The Wellington Road side sit precariously in ninth place after the result despite them impressing.

Kew are on the hunt for promotion but were inserted after losing the toss.

The opening partnership of Rob Maier (33) and the prolific Bruce Friderichs put on 99 before Sanjay Jain (2-79) struck.

Friderichs continued to plunder runs before he was eventually removed by Greg Smith (2-64) for 109 but Kew managed to reach 238-4.

"Bowling let us down again, we need to find form with the ball," remarked skipper Rukshan Soza.

"We will be looking for some inspiration from the overseas Kelum (Sathpath) next weekend on this front.

"We didn't create wicket taking opportunities," bemoaned Soza, although along with Dan Reddyhough he got Wokingham's response off to a flier.

The openers put on 57 in just six overs but Reddyhough got another dubious decision when he was given out lbw to Maier (2-41) for a rapid 33 that included seven fours.

However Adam England (2) and Stuart Hayter (0) departed quickly and they were reduced to 68-3.

The skipper was next to depart for a well compiled 62 off 74 balls with the score on 134.

The game was in the balance with 100 needed off 24 overs with six wickets in hand but as so often has happened this season, Wokingham lost wickets in clusters with Matt Noden going for a first ball duck and Kelum for two as the score soon became 143-6.

Any chance of victory for the visitors disappeared when Simon Myles top edged a sweep and was caught off Arshad Baig (2-38) for 32.

But Rakesh Patel blasted an entertaining 50 and Greg Smith hit 27 not out as Wokingham finished an agonising 14 runs short on 226-8.

Next up for Soza's troops is a must win match at Wellington Road against bottom of the table Maidenhead & Bray on Saturday.
