Fairford win boosts slender survival hopes
BRACKNELL Town clinched a crucial 4-1 victory over Fairford Town in a relegation six-pointer and joint-boss Steve McClurg declared: "We will keep fighting to the end."
Robins recorded their biggest win of the Hellenic Premier season by beating Fairford 4-1 at Larges Lane last Saturday.
And though Bracknell remain bottom of the table, their new-look team have taken four points from their last two matches to give their survival ambitions a glimmer of hope.
A delighted McClurg beamed: "We knew we had to win, the pressure was on us. It was a massive game and it was a great feeling to come out with a victory, we certainly needed it.
"What pleased me most was that we worked so hard for the win, but we have to push on from here now.
"We've taken four points from the last two games and we will try and keep that going for as long as we can, we will keep on fighting.
"We want to finish fourth from bottom and we will never give up in that respect. We need to stay tight as a unit and try our best."
Robins were eager to build on their 1-1 draw at Cheltenham Saracens and were soon in front against Fairford through a Tom Nugent header.
A smart finish from striker Ben Knight doubled Robins' lead only for Charlie Grabe to pull one back for the visitors.
But, with the wind behind them, Bracknell kept piling forward and they restored their two-goal advantage when Sam Barratt's corner looped straight into the net.
Fittingly, Knight, who is wanted by rival clubs, had the last say with his second goal of the game and Bracknell's fourth.
Robins even had the luxury of missing a penalty at 2-1 up when Ben Harris slammed a spot-kick against the bar.
McClurg added: "We gave away silly goals which is par for the course. But overall we deserved the win.
"Not only that, we played well and it's been getting better over the last few weeks.
"Our second was probably one of the goals of the season with the way we passed the ball and finished it off.
"There were some good individual performances and I was delighted at the end."
It was only Bracknell's fourth win of the league season, and two of those have come since Mick Woodham arrived from Windsor as assistant manager, bringing a clutch of players with him.
And McClurg added: "Mick Woodham has done a great job since he came to us from Windsor. He's come in and the lads are enjoying their football again. That is so important."
Bracknell do not have a fixture this weekend and return to action on Saturday, February 4 when they travel to Reading Town.
"It's another massive game," stressed McClurg. "We will train on Saturday, work hard next week and hopefully get another good result. But we're not getting carried away."
Bracknell: Adams, Gould, Sleet, T.Barratt, Abitogun, Muddyman, Nugent, Gibson, S.Barratt, Harris, Knight.
