READING HOCKEY CLUB'S Simon Mantell found himself drafted into the Great Britain team in Rio last night, but wasn't able to help them chalk up their first win of the Olympic competition.

The men managed to avoid a second straight defeat following their opening loss to Belgium on Saturday, but had to settle for a point after a 2-2 draw with New Zealand.

The 32-year-old forward had travelled to Rio as one of three reserves, but was given his chance after Alastair Brogdon broke a finger on his left hand during the defeat to the Belgians.

Mantell brings the experience of over 200 caps for England and Great Britain to the squad. And he was celebrating whent when David Condon was on hand to score from close range with less than two minutes on the clock after a goalmouth scramble.

But New Zealand drew level in spectacular fashion beyond the end of the first quarter when Kane Russell expertly controlled a 40-yard aerial pass from Nic Woods before smashing the ball through the legs of goalkeeper George Pinner.

Hayden Phillips then fired home on the backhand to give the Kiwis the lead, but Britain took advantage of James Coughlan being shown a green card five minutes before half-time to equalise through Barry Middleton's tap-in on the far post.

The Great Britain side also included the former Reading HC player, Nick Catlin, who lives in Pinkneys Green.

Both sides had chances to win it in the second half but Pinner and his opposite number Devon Manchester prevented any more scoring.

Great Britain's men are next in action against Brazil on Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, Great Britain's rowers were forced to sit on the sidelines yesterday when high winds meant that Sunday's Olympic rowing events were postponed at the Lagoa Stadium.

Among those due to compete were Olympic champions, Heather Stanning and Helen Glover.

All the races will take place today (Monday).
