THE Listed Winkfield Stakes at Ascot has been renamed in honour of legendary jockey, Pat Eddery.

The race, which opens King George Day on Saturday, July 23, will be run as Wooldridge Group Pat Eddery Stakes.

Eddery’s daughters, Natasha and Nicola, along with other family members, will present the winner’s trophies alongside the race sponsors.

Natasha said: “As a family, we all agreed that our fondest, most cherished memories of Dad’s incredible racing career were at Ascot Racecourse.

“While Dad had so much success all over the world, Ascot was one of his favourites by far.

“We are all so grateful that Ascot has chosen to honour his legacy on King George Day; Dad would be so very proud.”

Irishman Eddery was Britain’s champion jockey a joint modern-day record 11 times and the winner of every Classic in England and Ireland.

He was the leading rider at Royal Ascot on six occasions and won the 1975 (Grundy) and 1986 (Dancing Brave) renewals of the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Royal Ascot in 1989 proved to be his finest as he partnered eight winners (joining Lester Piggott, 1965 & 1975) on the record number which was only passed by Ryan Moore in 2015.

Eddery, pictured below, passed away last November, aged 63.

Meanwhile, Ascot has announced that this year’s Gold Cup will be run as The Gold Cup in Honour of The Queen’s 90th Birthday.

The race was won by The Queen’s horse, Estimate, in 2013.

Johnny Weatherby, Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot, said: “We are delighted to be celebrating The Queen’s 90th birthday .

“The Gold Cup, recently won of course by The Queen herself, is the historic centrepiece of Royal Ascot, and is very much the race which resonates most with the public.”

The race takes place on the third day of Royal Ascot on Thursday, June 16.

Ascot has also revealed all breeders of winning horses will receive a momento of of their achievements at the royal meeting.
