Green Day: Rock Band greenlit - finally

We've had The Beatles - which was, if you'll forgive the pun, fab - and we've had Aerosmith, AC DC and Metallica which were a little more disappointing, and now it's official: Green Day are getting the Rock Band treatment.

There's been whispers it was coming for a while - thanks in part to the loose lipped giddiness of Green Day frontman Billy Joe Armstrong himself a few months back - but Harmonix announced at the 2009 Spike Video Game Awards today that they Green Day: Rock Band has been, ahem, greenlit.

Hooray.

Billie Joe said: "We've worked with the Rock Band team in the past year to enable our fans to play tracks from 21st Century Breakdown, and we're excited to now be working on a game, spanning our entire career."

He added: "We want people to fire this up, choose their favorite Green Day tracks, and play along with us as Rock Band avatars so they can feel what it's like to perform on stage as Green Day."

Harmonix say the game will be 'an extension and expression of Green Day's most-defining albums and key moments throughout their career to date'. It will feature likenesses of Green Day members Billie Joe, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool, as well as select venues and art specific to the band's history and is set for release in 2010 on all three major consoles. Plus, the track list will be fully exportable, giving players the opportunity to play the songs in Rock Band and Rock Band 2 on the 360 and PS3.

And if you need a Green Day fix in the meantime, three more tracks from the 21st Century Breakdown album are released tomorrow - which'll whet the appetite a little more for what is now definitely my first must-buy game of 2010. Now there'd just better put Jesus of Suburbia in the tracklist, or I shall be very grumpy indeed.

* Are you looking forward to Green Day: Rock Band? And after Metallica, Aerosmith, AC DC and - of course - The Beatles, which other bands would like to get this treatment? Have your say in the comments below.
