Ladies who bake are flour-ishing
CAKE-MAKERS thought customers were taking the rise when they asked for increasingly bizarre sponges but Rachel Richards and Fiona Cook soon realised their reputation for special orders was the icing on the cake for their business.
They have had to re-write their business plan for Give Me Cake because so many people want their celebration specials.
The pair have had to cut the number of farmers markets and shows selling sponges baked in Fiona's kitchen in The Mount, Reading, to concentrate on commissions for birthdays, Christenings and weddings.
They are currently making between 15 and 20 a week and now plan to get that number up to between 20 and 30 by cutting out one weekend in four of their weekend sales programme.
Some of the more outlandish requests include:
* A 'pregnant' cake for a baby shower
* A wedding cake in the shape of a barn, complete with animals
* Edible Reading football shirts
Fiona said: "We have probably done between 1,200 and 1,500 celebration cakes since we started in 2007. It used to take us hours and hours but because we learn fast, we have been on courses and we are more efficient."
Give Me Cake is now preparing for Mother's Day, one of the busiest times of the year. Call 0118 987 1768 or visit www.givemecake.co.uk
