AN ARTISTIC group that brings a breath of fresh air to the community is inviting new people to get creative.

The Virginia Water Arts Society has been running for 46 years and is looking to draw in some new members for a busy programme of activities this year, including its outdoor exhibitions.

Jean McDonnell, chairman of the society, said: "We enjoy the exhibitions and the community enjoys them, it's nice to bring art to other people, nobody else seems to display art in the open air."

Each month, the group gathers for a talk or a visit from a professional artist who demonstrates how to create art in their particular medium, giving members a chance to pick up tips for their own work.

Mrs McDonnell added: "We really do promote the arts in the widest sense and we try to facilitate a place with a social atmosphere for people to see professionals at work.

"If people enjoy watching artists be creative they are welcome to come along."

The exhibitions are the highlights of the year, held in the summer and the winter when all the members are invited to showcase their creations, whether they are paintings, arts and crafts or photography.

Last year, the society introduced the Pat Hare Award, named in honour of one of the founding members who left £15,000 to the society when she died in 2003.

Her vision was for the money to be used towards a big exhibition at Ascot Racecourse, which the members are hoping they can hold in the future once they have raised more money towards it.

In the meantime, a member of the society is presented with the award for the most eye-catching piece at each exhibition.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, February 1 at 7.30pm when Rodney Lucas will discuss creating a landscape in Genesis oil paints. It will be at the Community Centre in Beechmont Road. Visit www.virginiawater.org.uk/artsociety for more information.
