A DOG owner concerned for a stray dog has stressed the need for a dog warden.

Pet lover Rachel Hassanein, from Crown Wood, spotted a stray Jack Russell Terrier on Wednesday, July 28, at the allotments in Ringmead opposite Wheatley, Great Hollands, but could not find any organisation to take responsibility.

The council no longer has a dog warden, and contracts out the service.

Ms Hassanein said: "The RSPCA says it is not their responsibility, the council say it is not their responsibility.

"The RSPCA told me the council has funding from the Government to deal with stray dogs, but when I phoned the dog warden, they do not come out to stray dogs.

"The little dog is still out there. It is going round in circles, I think it is in distress.

"If I said it was a rottweiler or bull dog, what would they do then?"

The RSPCA has since set a humane trap to catch the dog, but a spokesperson confirmed that the responsibility for strays lies with the local authority.

Steve Loudoun, chief officer for environment and public protection, said: "Bracknell Forest Council works with a private contractor to collect stray dogs and residents wanting to report one should contact the council directly on 01344 352000.

"Our contractor does not take reports of stray dogs directly from members of the public - the council instructs the contractor to collect a stray dog if it is in possession of the person reporting it.

"Every effort is made to return a dog to its owner but if there is no collar with address or the dog has not been 'microchipped' it will be taken to kennels."
