ROSES of many names were smelling sweet at the opening of a newly designed garden.

The new rose garden at Savill Garden, welcomed the public from June 15 to view its range of roses in a contemporary layout.

Mark Flanagan, keeper of the gardens, said: "The new Rose Garden leaves behind traditional elements and the formality associated with conventional designs and leads us into a new way of displaying roses to create a fresh and stimulating visitor experience.

"The Savill Garden has a tradition of exploring new ways of presenting plants and showcasing new varieties and we are continuing with this progressive approach with a design that looks to the future."

Two and a half thousand roses have been planted around the curving and interlocking paths that wind their way to the centre of the garden, which is surrounded by herbaceous borders.

The rich palette of colours ranges from dark plums to soft pinks, whites and tangerines are repeat flowering roses meaning that the garden will remain colourful through until September.

Savill Garden commissioned Wilson McWilliam Associates to create the up-to-date garden, which includes a raised walkway. The different breeds of rose were chosen by Harvey Stephens, Head of Savill Garden for their vibrancy and perfume.
