ECO-conscious students learned about being sustainable during a school activity day.

Pupils from Charters School, in Sunningdale, celebrated Green Britain Day by looking at how they could reduce waste and using batteries efficiently on Thursday, June 17.

Science and chemistry teacher, David Marsh, discussed with his pupils the benefits of switching to reusable batteries, before replacing all the one time use batteries in their classroom with reusable ones given to them by Energizer.

The students also turned off all the electronic equipment that was on stand-by. Mr Marsh said: "Did you know that a normal computer uses 75 watts on stand-by? That's more than a light bulb. So we have already saved a huge amount of energy just by turning things off."

During the day students learned about sustainability in their different lessons and installed some water saving gadgets in the toilets that they had received from Thames Water.

Mr Marsh added: "The pupils were really enthusiastic and pretty clued up about it all, but they never realised that they could make a real difference themselves just by doing small things."

A competition to design a poster about sustainability also ran throughout the day. The winning poster was made by Zuzia Burda, 12.
