GETTING grubby in the garden is teaching students about the joys of growing their own vegetables.

Pupils at Charters School, in Ascot, have started a gardening club at their school and are now beginning to reap what they have sown.

Year seven pupil, Thomas Mulvihill, recently took home a cucumber, cabbage and two potatoes and some turnips after tending to the vegetables at the club.

Christine Potbury, a teaching assistant who helps with the club, said "We try to listen to the pupils and incorporate their ideas and thinking into the plans as we feel this is their project. For instance, we asked them which vegetables and fruits they would like to grow as well as suggesting some to them."

Samantha O'Gorman, teaching assistant, added: "We are guiding them when we know their suggestions really will not work so that the garden can be as successful as possible, we are all learning so much ourselves as we go."

The project, which runs on a Tuesday evening, aims to help students to care for their environment and are using organic methods to grow their vegetables.

As part of the Royal Horticultural Society's Campaign for School Gardening, students are also taking part in a carrot trial and are growing carrots in three different environments to see how this would affect the performance of the seeds.

Support for the gardening club has come from Richard Pilgrim, co-headteacher at the school as well as agri-business company Syngenta, the Fuel Allotment Trust and Hillier Nursery and Garden Centre.
