REWARDS will be given to residents in the Royal Borough who recycle as part of a new scheme launched on Monday [7].

In the same week that the new Government has announced plans to implement a nationwide recycle reward scheme, the Royal Borough is leading the way, rolling out the reward invitation to more than 60,000 households.

Bins will have a chip which weighs how much material is in them.

Households will then be rewarded points which can be redeemed for discounts and offers at more than 100 lretailers, restaurants and leisure facilities or can be donated to schools. Cllr Liam Maxwell, the Royal Borough's lead member for policy and performance, said: "Paying the public to recycle works - it increases recycling rates, reduces our environmental impact, reduces council tax and helps local businesses.

"We believe that incentives not penalties are the best way of encouraging every resident to recycle more. This reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill and brings economic benefits for our local businesses in these difficult times."

Residents will also no longer have to divide their recycling into different boxes but can instead put all paper, card, glass metal and plastic bottles into one blue wheelie bin. The mixed waste recycling service will be rolled out across the borough from now until early 2011 and residents interested in collecting points as part of the recycle scheme must activate their individual RecycleBank account.

For more information or to activate your RecycleBank account visit www.recyclebank.com or call 0800 077 6009.
