NEW Bracknell MP Dr Phillip Lee has pledged to "repay the trust" placed in him by voters.

After the expenses scandal that ended Tory Andrew MacKay's 27-year career as MP for the area, Dr Lee said he was overwhelmed with the trust that Bracknell residents had placed in him.

He said: "I am genuinely overwhelmed. People placed so much trust to such a majority off the back of how I came to be a candidate, I have got to repay that trust. Thank you to the people of Bracknell for placing their trust in such numbers and I promise to give my very best."

The Conservative winner managed a comfortable win with 27,327 votes at the election on Thursday, with Liberal Democrat Ray Earwicker gaining 11,623 beating Labour's John Piasecki into second place with 8,755 votes.

Dr Lee added: "We wanted to regain the public's trust and I think this vote shows that and I am proud of that."

Bracknell residents turned out in their droves to vote, with the turnout in the constituency up 4% to 67.91% and candidates reported seeing voters queuing out of the doors at polling stations.

Conservatives were celebrating a triple win the in area, as the party also retained its seats in Wokingham and Windsor.

Tory John Redwood, who has been Wokingham MP since 1987, almost doubled his majority, gaining a total of 54,620 votes - increasing his majority to 13,492.

He said: "I am delighted and overwhelmed with the support I have had. I pledge to work hard for all the people of Wokingham regardless of their political views.

"I would like to pay a very big vote of thanks to my team and everyone who worked so hard to secure the Conservative vote in Wokingham."

Liberal Democrats Prue Bray came in second place with 15,262 votes, an increase of nearly 1,000 votes compared to the previous campaign, ahead of Labour's George Davidson with 5,516 votes.

In Windsor, Tory Adam Afriyie was elected as MP for the second time running with 30,172 votes. Due to boundary changes he now covers parts of Binfield and Warfield.
