CHRISTIANS are aiming to celebrate Easter's message of love and compassion by carrying out practical community tasks.

Different churches from across Bracknell are working together on the Hope Bracknell week of social action from Sunday, April 11 to Sunday, April 18.

Administrator Fay Philp said: "The churches involved in Hope Bracknell are keen to work together to serve their community by offering practical help in our schools, peoples' homes and the community itself, like with litterpicking.

"As Christians we are taught to serve and rather than just talk about this, we want to show God's love in a practical way. Hope Bracknell gives us the opportunity to do this."

Christian volunteers, plus anyone else who would like to help, will assist with home decorating, clearing school gardens, picking up rubbish and packing bags at supermarkets.

They will also spend a day in Bracknell town centre offering passersby prayer, including prayer for healing.

Hope Bracknell developed out of the national Hope 08 initiative, which encouraged churches to get more involved in community work.

Churches in Bracknell which participate in Hope Bracknell include Kerith Community Church in Church Road, the Warfield Churches - a group of five Church of England congregations based in the north of Bracknell - and Easthampstead Baptist Church (EBC) in South Hill Road.

Mrs Philp said: "It is good to have churches working together. Hope Bracknell is what the church is about - looking after the area we live and work in."

The week will start with a service at 6.30pm on Sunday at EBC.

The social action projects will be carried out from Tuesday to Saturday, April 17 and volunteers can still offer to join in. Anyone who wants to help with decorating must be aged over 18 though.

Mrs Philp said: "People of all ages can get involved in something if they want to. Families can get together and get involved."

On Saturday, April 17, members of Southampton-based team Miracle Street will be offering to pray for people in Charles Square in Bracknell town centre from 11am-2pm.

Also on Saturday, April 17, there will be a social meal and live music performance by Cathy Burton and Dan Wheeler at EBC from 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5.

The week will end with a service at 4pm on Sunday, April 18 at EBC.
