WONDERLAND: St Teresa's pupils Sam Southan as The Mad Hatter and Thomas Crook as the White Rabbit

COLOURFUL: Staff and children at Forest Lodge Day Nursery.

CAPTAIN Hook, Spongebob Squarepants and Harry Potter were just some of the characters on show during World Book Day.

Hundreds of schoolchildren dressed up as their favourite book stars to celebrate the national event, including those at Meadow Vale Primary School in Priestwood.

Headteacher, Nigel Duncan, aka Captain Hook, said: "The children enjoyed celebrating books with a variety of reading and book-based activities through the day."

The pupils showed off their array of creative costumes at a whole school assembly.

Youngsters at St Teresa's Catholic Primary School, in Wokingham, came in dressed as The Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland while headteacher Louise Adams came as Cruella De Vil.

Teachers at Licensed Victuallers' School, in Ascot, brought World Book Day to life with the languages department dressing as wicked witches, complete with pointed hats, wild hair and billowing cloaks.

Students had to spot and name every character, which included Desperate Dan and Rorschach from the book and film Watchmen, to win a prize.

Everyone took part in a 'Drop Everything and Read' -a 20 minute silence where students and teachers devoted themselves to reading.

Youngsters at All Saints Primary School in Wokingham were visited by the borough's Mayor Cllr Barrie Patman who took part in their Big Read.

He said: "I met many of the Year 3 pupils back in September last year and I am absolutely delighted they have invited me back to their school during World Book Day celebrations.

"Children thoroughly enjoy having books and stories read to them and I hope this will encourage them to read more."

Community wardens, PCSOs, community workers, parents and governors also helped the children celebrate reading.

More than 20 children and their parents visited Binfield Library to listen to stories and do some colouring.

Margaret Cox, supervisor at the Benetfeld Road library, said: "The children and their parents all enjoyed the stories and colouring."

Youngsters at Forest Lodge Day Nursery, at Ascot's Heatherwood Hospital, dressed as characters from their favourite books and brought the tales along to nursery to be read to them.
