A TRAIN conductor was knocked unconscious by a passenger after asking him to buy a valid ticket.
British Transport Police (BTP) has now released CCTV images of the attacker and is appealing for information following the "vicious attack".
The attack took place on a South West Trains' 5.30pm service from Guildford to Ascot on Saturday, February 20.
Detective Constable Andy Parkinson, of BTP's public protection unit, said the attack happened at around 6.30pm.
He said: "The man had a row with the conductor after he was asked to buy a valid ticket. He then became abusive towards another passenger before walking towards him with a fire extinguisher.
"The conductor, a 56-year-old from Aldershot, asked the man to leave the train but once on the platform the man punched the victim, knocking him unconscious."
The man fled Ascot Station immediately after the incident.
It is thought he has connections to London and Surrey.
Det Con Parkinson added: "This is a vicious attack on a man who was simply doing his job and if you recognised the man pictured in the CCTV image then we want to hear from you."
Anyone with information should call 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 461 of 20/02/10 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
