COUNCILLORS went ahead with a 2.94% council tax rise at their budget vote last night - and also agreed to hand over management of The Look In cafe.

Campaigners calling for the council to continue running the popular town centre cafe for the over 50s protested outside the council offices beforehand and formally handed in a 2,510 signature petition.

However, the majority vote of the council was for the council to stop running the cafe and councillors suggested instead that they would support plans for a voluntary group to take it over.

A voluntary committee -the Look In Community Cafe - has formed to discuss running the cafe as a not-for-profit organisation and will hold a public meeting today (Thursday) to discuss its plans at Birch Hill Community Centre in Leppington at 2.30pm.

Anyone who would like to be on a user group for the cafe or to volunteer at it can put their name in a box at The Look In in Broadway or to email info@bfva.org
