SPORTY pupils are bowled over to have made it through to the regional finals of a cricket competition.

Students at Charters School in Sunningdale beat girls from Garth Hill College in Priestwood to win the under 13s Lady Taverners Berkshire County Finals and will go through to the regional finals in April.

The event was held at Bracknell Leisure Centre last month and the under 15s contest was won by Reading Girls school.

Tim Dancer, senior competition manager for Berkshire, said: "This year's event showcased the growth in female cricketing talent within the county, more schools entered than ever before and the standard of cricket was clearly higher."

The teams have been coached by England women's cricket captain Charlotte Edwards as part of the Cricket Foundation's Chance To Shine coaching ambassador programme and Mr Dancer said: "We are incredibly lucky to have Charlotte Edwards working with the schools in Berkshire, and it is clear that the work she has been doing is developing not only the talent pool but also the enthusiasm for the female game in Berkshire.

"We look forward to working with Charlotte again in the future and wish Charters and Reading Girls the best of luck in the next round."

Mark Roche, Berkshire cricket development manager, said: "Once again the standard of cricket was very high, and we wish both schools the very best for the regional finals.

"Thanks must go to Mark Foster, Sam Ward and the rest of the competition team for organising the competition and to Charlotte for her outstanding effort in coaching the schools."
